Sunday Favourite - Ivory Road by King Charles (Song)

A lyrical genius, musician King Charles combines happy tones and melodies to bring forth a wonderful song. At first listen King Charles takes us on a gentle journey of words and in a subsequent listen it feels as though we belong in the world that is created.

Track number 3 of his 2011 debut album Loveblood, the buzzing happy tune paints a picture and tells a story. Producer Mathew Wilder adds a unique touch to an otherwise almost acoustic performance.

While it has been many years since the song has released, I stumbled upon an extended version on YouTube that has a few more verses. As a writer myself, I adore words of any kind and an extra verse upon one of my favourite songs is delightful to find.

The song may seem long in its 3 minutes and 59 seconds, at first glance, however, one quickly forgets the time as the song picks up speed around the 36th second mark.

The first half of the song is peppy and a song to a lover, where they use similes and juxtapose words to show one's love for the other. A catchy simple tune with profound lyrics has the listener hooked to each word. Themes of love, loneliness, how nature keeps carrying on, and how we too, with a little help from our loved ones can conquer our sadness.

The imagery created of a world in the second half of a song, utilizes metaphors of animals like a circus elephant, a shunned lion and wild horses coming home. The lyrics can be interpreted differently, but to me it seems that the singer talks about the cruelty of nature and how despite it all, we all belong in this world.

The unpredictable final verse is both inspiring and tinged with a hope. Like a warm hug and reassurance, the song ends with "...conquer them all."

The lyrics paint a lovely picture and King Charle's effortless singing of every word - be it bunched up fast or slow and building up to a crescendo makes this song an absolute delight to listen to. A comforting melody, if you have not listened to the album or this song before, I highly recommend that you do.

Epilogue

Epilogue   13 years later: "Does this tuxedo make me look fat?" asked Axky trying to button up the coat.  "Um honey," started Paula hesitantly trying to say yes without hurting his feelings. "You see it's not your fault, it's mine. With Vicky being with us I sort of went overboard with cooking delicious stuff the last couple of months. It's totally normal that you would need a larger size---" "You  are  calling me fat!" exclaimed Axky melodramatically. "I can't believe it." "No! I mean yes, a little," said Paula cursing under her breath. Why was he so sensitive about his weight anyway? It wasn't like it was important to her. "That is it!" said Axky taking off the ill fitting coat. "My new diet starts now." "Axky you can't diet now." Said Paula exasperatedly. "It's Arthur's wedding next week. Then we are going on a vacation to Italy. How can you possibly pass up...

Wenesday Short Story - Prompt - Snow

First Fall My pen friend from another country came to visit me today. I picked her up from the airport in my battered old convertable, the heater working just enough to keep us safe from frostbite. "Do you think it will snow?" she asked as soon as she got in the front seat beside me. She had never seen snowfall before so I could understand her enthusiasm. I personally hate winters. The cold gets to me, I always have a runny nose and my sore throat prohibits ice cream consumption. Further, I detest freezing my fingers off shovelling snow off the driveway and despise the extra work needed to put snow trackers on the car tyres. But she looked so eager to see the little specks of frozen water, I couldn't help but allow a small smile to form on my face. "Maybe." I said looking at the grey skies. It was a terribly dull evening, dark and cloudy, the road illuminated by yellow headlights and bylanes with half hearted Christmas decorations. My friend was dressed in br...
